Ajay Kathrani, Director on Project DevelopmentAjay Kathrani

Ajay was the Institute’s Director of Project Development working on future project and programme development priorities and securing new partnerships and projects. 

Ajay previously worked at the London Development Agency where he led on London’s Science and Industry Council. Working with the heads of some of London’s top universities, and leading businesses and public sector organisations, Ajay commissioned innovation support and knowledge transfer projects to enhance and promote London’s life science, design and environmental technology base.

Before becoming interested in economic and sustainable development, Ajay’s early career was spent in the broadcasting and media sectors. At the BBC, he held a series of senior business strategy roles in factual television planning and commissioning, and launched a number of new audience-facing services across digital radio, interactive tv and bbc.co.uk.

 

Ed MetcalfeEd Metcalfe

Ed Metcalfe is one of the Founding Trustees of the Institute and was part of the Executive board as Research Director, working closely with private and public sector partners and universities to stimulate innovation at scale in sustainability and resilience. 

Ed also worked at the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) from 2002 to 2009 where he was the Chief Scientific Advisor. In this role, he collaborated with universities and businesses to boost high tech skills and innovation, stimulate economic development and regeneration, and facilitate the business cases for science and innovation campuses, including the Institute for Sustainability and the Harwell International Space Innovation Campus. As innovation lead for the Regional Development Agencies during this time, Ed led a successful £180m strategic innovation partnership with the Technology Strategy Board.

Before joining SEEDA, Ed was Head of the Department of Chemical and Life Sciences and Professor of Materials Chemistry at the University of Greenwich.
