Towards Sustainable Cities at Shanghai Expo

The two day high profile event was part of London Week (26 to 29 July) at Shanghai Expo.

Working with its sister Institute, the Sino-UK Institute for Sustainability based at Tongji University in Shanghai, EcoNetworks (a research collaboration between leading UK and Chinese Universities, funded by EPSRC) and the London Development Agency, the Institute co-hosted a two day workshop for Chinese and UK delegates from Government, academia and business, titled 'Towards Sustainable Cities - Research Frontiers and Business Opportunities'.

Shanghai

China and the UK share a number of common challenges in the delivery of cities that are resource efficient, increase quality of life and provide opportunities for green economic growth and jobs.  Towards Sustainable Cities has been a significant step in developing opportunities for future collaborative research, innovation and investment between the UK and China as well as an opportunity to share best practice.
Day one attendees discussed research and policy frontiers.  Day two addressed the key challenges and the business opportunities associated with delivering sustainable cities, drawing on best practice from the UK and China, in four areas: the challenges of scaling-up; transport and logistics; sustainable utilities infrastructure; and establishing the evidence base for investment.

The Institute and partners will publish a summary of the event and its outcomes over the next few months, identifying potential opportunities for project collaboration in the UK and China.

The Institute also hosted a Learning Legacy seminar in association with the London Development Agency, which shared experience and best practice from the 2012 Games to date.
