2010 has been a busy year for the Institute for Sustainability as we transition from being a start up to a fully operational organisation.

The start of the year saw us move into our own office space at 1 Heron Quay in Canary Wharf, at the heart of the Thames Gateway where many of our practical research projects and demonstrators will take place.  Our thanks to Canary Wharf Group for donating the space.

We have recently welcomed a Delivery Director to the Institute's senior management team.  Dr Neil Johnston has joined Institute Chief Executive Ian Short and Director for Research and Business Development Ed Metcalfe.

The Institute is leading a Sustainable Utilities Infrastructure project to demonstrate the benefits of a systems approach to providing energy, waste, water, transport and information, and the potential for whole towns, cities and communities to operate more sustainably as a result.

The built environment has an important role to play in meeting targets to reduce carbon emissions by 80% by 2050.  This includes retrofitting existing buildings to perform more efficiently - which is estimated to represent a spend of over £100 billion over the next 20 years.

The Institute, Barking Riverside Ltd, University of East London (UEL), the Environment Agency and small and medium enterprise (SME) business partners are working together on a 12 month study investigating practical green roof applications to help mitigate the environmental impact of large scale regeneration.
