The change to a low carbon economy is going to be a challenge to all businesses and perhaps none more so than the construction industry. With 40% of carbon being produced in buildings and the cost of energy rising year on year, the demand for new technologies to reduce energy costs is set to rise.

The Institute will take a leading role in preparing industry for a low carbon future.  Starting with the construction industry the Institute will ensure that the growth opportunities from the emerging market in green technologies provides economic benefits for local firms close to home. Over £10m of funding has been secured to allow the Institute to ensure that SMEs in London are the first to benefit.

Demonstration projects already underway look at the issues around incorporating new technologies such as micro energy generation, draught proofing and insulation into existing homes.  Businesses that join the programme will be able to visit the demonstrators and access the supply chain. Opportunities to gain hands on advice and guidance will open up as new openings in the growing retrofit market become apparent.

There will be a variety of ways that SMEs can become involved and a series of options will be launched shortly.
